freebmd.org.uk, freecen.org.uk and freereg.co.uk are also useful but can be a bit sketchy in what has actually been digitised as it's done by volunteers

Nurse, it is bit of a minefield with these things really, the providers are much of a muchness in all honesty with not a lot of exclusivity in their records normally. The other thing to bear in mind a lot of the information is actually free, what these providers do is put an easier to use portal in front of it. I have held full worldwide memberships for Ancestry and My heritage and have done the DNA tests with both. I found the DNA matching of MH was better, but I think the trees and research of Ancestry is slightly better. My suggestion would be to pick one premium provider and then use the free resources of familysearch.org for birth death census etc. and if you do a DNA test, use Gedmatch.com to get a cross match against the different DNA providers of which there are quite a few.

I always look up the Shitlers, one of whom is buried next to my maternal grandfather's parents in Corfu Castle.
Disappointed that there's only one left in 1921. Not sure if peer pressure or the Grim Reaper got to the rest.

Charley thanks
I knew Plaistow was formerly in Essex and I also guessed that the compiler had confused it with Sussex or maybe misread it but I still think it was pretty shoddy work. I think BBB gives the best advice don't rely on any summaries but use copies of the original documents for a more accurate account.
Findmypast invites you to submit amendments. Which they will act upon if they are in line with the original source document. I did this for my Dad's record but I am not going to pay to do it for his eight siblings!
Bit of a cheek to charge the public to put their records right!

Re: The 1921 Census online

According to information I'veunearthed last night on FMP, my maternal GF (born 1890) was described as "Warehouseman, Heavy work" and my maternal GGF was variously described as "General Goods dealer" and "Costermonger", which might be one of the VERY few nuggets of truth my mum told me (she said the family had a fruit and veg stall in East Lane market, off the Walworth Road) My mum's brother (born 1921, died in action in WW2, by my mum's account) was described as a 'tricycle boy' under 'occupation' in another record (not the census) when he was a young teenager. I have no idea what this means, and Google can't help. Very surprised to see my aunt Rose (who I was close to as a child) had been a printer when she was a young woman.

My 3 kids did the DNA thing a few years back.
All it told them was that their ancestors were from the UK and possibly, earlier, Europe.
Unsurprising, given that there were Scots fishermen a couple of generations back on both their maternal & paternal family tree and farm workers filling in the gaps, again on both ancestral lines.

It was Ancestry DNA kit but you can then upload onto other sites to get extra matches. My GGF's wife remarried in 1910 as a widow but I now find that under his new name he lived to 1939. Was amazing when the grandson from his new family replied to me saying, oh yes he was also known by that name and had a lot of German books.

Charley, yes, re Plaistow and Essex.
I've been looking at the 1921 census for my family on my mum's side, because I don't have enough info about my paternal grandparents (I'm going to have to order my dad's birth certificate). Both sides of my family were living in Southeark (parish of St George the Martyr) and they keep referring to it as Southwark, SURREY.

NR,
I think they are much of a muchness, whoever is offering best discount was my choice. FYP getting the 2021 census is a plus but they you still have to pay the same for that even with membership.
I did DNA and solved a mystery that had puzzled me and others for 30 years. Turned out my GGF of German origin had faked his death, changed his name and moved to Portsmouth in 1910 as a 41 year old marrying a girl of 19.
My closest DNA match had never been able to find a birth record for him and we had never been able to find a death record. Amazing that splitting into a tube 100 years later tracked him down.

BBB
Do you think Find My Past is better than Ancestry?
I am currently weighing up the options.
My parents (both dead) were extremely evasive and also told outright lies about their family backgrounds and now I'm in the mood to look into it. However, there is a good chance my dad was not my biological father, so I am considering doing one of those DNA ones. I have a very good idea who the culprit might have been, so if I start matching with members of his family, then I would know the switch direction when building my 'tree'.

Well, for 3 years, apart from going to view in person, there is no other option but Find My Past. But sounds like it would be better to pay £3.50 for the actual version compiled by your forebears than £2.50 for the transcript.
I found my GF who had moved in with his wife to be and her widowed mother. But his dad, brother and sister had also moved in to the house in Mitcham Road. Love it, your daughter brings home a boyfriend and he moves in with 3 of his family as well.
